I didn’t know what to do. Should I be a good citizen and take the matter to the police or be a good human and save the girl ? But then these were insane people who wouldn’t think even once before slaining me to one of their deities. I couldn’t ask help from my predatory father nor from my boss or colleagues. The reason being they just don’t care about anyone but themselves. I needed someone on my side. Someone who would believe what I had seen. This was the moment I realised how hollow my social life was and how lonely I had been without a friend or boyfriend at the age of 26. Well, I had Megan. But she is a medical professional and I was sure she wouldn’t pay heed to any of this and would instead count it as one of my episodes.
As I stood there rewinding my life and everyone I ever knew, with my unkempt hair brushing through my light green eyes and my pale skin feeling the wintry chills, a strange face came to my mind. I still had John. John and I had a platonic friendship since school days. None of us was a popular kid and so none of us was glittery enough to hog any limelight. We used to be travel companions while returning from school. Though I did not have the luxury of dreaming any romance, some part of me knew John liked me. Well, he was unaware of the perils plaguing my life back home but I could notice the pure, innocent concern he had for me. I was not quite sure how he felt about me now. I felt a strange desire to meet him and feel his presence. Without wasting a minute, I went home, got my laptop, opened Facebook and tracked John. I left him a message and my contact number and sat there expecting a reply from him. The night passed but there was no response. My father had been on a business trip for a week and so I could have a peaceful sleep.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I kept devising plans on how to save the girl. The more I thought of it the more impossible it seemed. Inorder to divert my attention for a bit I decided to watch something on the lappy. As soon as I switched it on, there was a popup message that left me exhilarated. It was John. I felt some strange emotion rising through my tummy right to my mouth. I couldn’t fathom what was it. After a series of robotic replies, we decided to meet the next day at Viviana Mall, one of the biggest in the city. A range of emotions kept hitting me all through the night.
